November - December 2017

The economy is in good shape.  Retail Sales are up 8.22% over the trailing quarter annualized, durable good orders are up 8.21% over the trailing year.  The stock market as measured by the S&P 500 is up 19% over the last year.

It’s a great time to review your investment portfolio because it won’t last forever.

Some things to keep an eye on.  Corporate profits are down 2% over the trailing quarter and if it continues … at some point it will challenge these price levels. The biggest risk is that debt levels have never been higher.  With almost no media coverage the national debt broke $20 trillion. If interest rates move up only 1% it will cannibalize $200 billion dollars out of the national budget.  That’s equal to 35% of the Federal Governments non-defense budget.  Household debt has also never been higher; it’s up 115% since the year 2000.  Household debt has been compounding at 7.85% for over 60 years while the economy has been only growing at around 3%.  It’s simple math, at some point these debt levels will dampen consumer demand.
